Sod laid over unprepared ground follows the ground. Grading, removing the old turf and preparing the soil is most of the job, and it is the part that decides whether the lawn is level and whether the roots ever leave the sod mat.
The first three weeks decide everything. New sod needs frequent light watering until it roots, then a rapid transition to deep infrequent watering — and getting that transition wrong is the most common reason new sod fails in its first summer.

Sod that dries out in its first fortnight shrinks, gaps at the seams and does not root, and that is the failure we see most often on lawns laid without an irrigation plan.
